Kett’s Park Woods

This is a mixed woodland planted during the 1990’s as part of the Hart’s Farm housing development. In 2017, South Norfolk District Council asked the project to provide our expertise in the management of the woodland to Wymondham Town Council and Greening Wymondham.  The aim of this work is to increase biodiversity and public access to the woodland as well as support and train a locally based volunteer group (Greening Wymondham) in this work.

After some initial meetings with the council to discuss the proposal, a site management and work plan was produced. This included an application for a 5 year felling licence from the Forestry Commission for the management of the woodland, public and employers liability insurance, and contractor management.

Through our understanding and experience of working with and supporting volunteers and their aims, we organised and ran twice monthly volunteer work days to encourage and support Greening Wymondham to maintain and enhance the woodland. This has involved guidance and instruction of what woodland management is, training in the use of the tools, safe working practice onsite, producing and implementing a risk assessment, providing personal protection equipment (i.e. hard hats, gloves) and the opportunity to gain brushcutter and chipper licences (NPTC and Lantra).

Implementation of the management plan has involved thinning of the woodland, creation of a pathway, re-planting and providing expertise and support for grant applications.
